The Presidential Election—A National Dizziness

The presidential election is something less than a public forum to explore the political will of the American population. The American primary system may well provide the citizens of the United States with a measure of participation unknown in other parts of the world, but the seemingly open procedure for the presidential election results is a distorted image of political representation. The electoral process surrounding the president's office has always been a great spectacle. In the era of the ever present television cameras, it has become part of the nation's entertainment, although for most people not as suspenseful or entertaining as popular television programs but definitely as disassociated from the viewer's own reality. The candidates reinforce this appearance of surrealism by trying, as if in a boxing match, to score points in their confrontation with the opponent instead of focusing on the nation's problems.
